Tony Bennett

Many people have performed the American classic "If I Ruled the World" including James Brown, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes and Tom Jones to name a few but when it comes to this type of jazz/show tune it always comes back to the stylish phrasings of Tony Bennett. AND it doesn't matter how old he is right now in October of 2011. Every time that voice comes on the radio you can tell...Timeless Tony

Composed by Leslie Bricusse and Cyril Ornadel, the song was originally written for the the 1963 West End musical Pickwick (based on Charles Dickens's The Pickwick Papers). In the context of the stage musical, the song is sung by Samuel Pickwick, when he is mistaken for an election candidate and called on by the crowd to give his manifesto. Sir Harry Secombe recorded the tune in 1963 and it climbed to number 18 on the U.K. hit charts in that year.

For my version I used a simplified orchestral background of strings, bass, piano and drums courtesy of the folks at Ameritz.
